Tuning Car Different Brand

Through a combination of keen pricing, shrewd niche marketing and access to some of the best engines the PSA Group has to offer, the Citroen Xsara has become an unlikely success story. Although few would know it, its based on the Peugeot 306 platform, a chassis thats a bit of a museum piece in todays high-tech world. Despite this many will attest to the fact that whatever Xsara you opt for, its a rattling good drive. Used examples reflect Citroens ruthless price slashing tactics and low mileage cars can be yours for prices that read like a misprint.
Here is an affordable family hatchback developed with a phone, satellite navigation and stereo system that responds to the sound of your voice. A car with curtain airbags that save you from flying glass in an accident and electronic brakeforce activation to prevent the likelihood of accidents in the first place. A car with radar sensors that guide you into tight parking spaces. Youll need to purchase one of the plusher models or more likely find one that features the best part of the options list to enjoy all of this of course, but low prices should leave you some manoeuvring room to do so.
Theres a stereo that adjusts its volume to the speed of the car, hazard warning lights that switch themselves on under emergency braking and front airbags with two levels of inflation, depending on what speed you crash at. User-friendly is the phrase that springs to mind. High equipment levels are also evident, with big car features like audio controls on the rake and reach-adjustable steering wheel fitted as standard on every model. These are added to more conventional inclusive fare like power steering, central locking and a good quality stereo.

Most of the models on offer have air conditioning as well as power for the sunroof, windows and mirrors. More significant, however, are the numerous clever design features that show ingenuity to be alive and well at Citroen. Typical is the way you can clip the rear parcel shelf behind the back seat of the five-door when not in use. You can also lock the split-folding rear seats in place; this is particularly useful when youre using the garage key provided for you to give to dealerships or valet parkers.
Unlike the drivers key, it wont open either the boot or the glove box, so you dont have to worry about valuables. Safety is another area where expectations have risen in recent years and here the Xsara doesnt disappoint. The cars structure is reinforced to prevent bodywork intrusion in side-on accidents and twin front and side airbags along with ABS are standard across the range. Theres also a deactivation feature for the front passenger airbag, to allow children to be carried safely in the front.
Prices for the big lamp Xsara start at £2,300 for a 2000X registered 1.4i LX hatch, although budgeting another £200 for the 1.6i engine is a good idea. An SX trim with this engine will retail from £2,800 and a VTR Coupe will be around £2,700, again on the 2000 X plate
.citroen-xsara-tuning-grise-copy.jpg
A newer VTR, on a 2002 52-plate will be £3,500. See what we mean about bargains? The 2.0-litre VTS is well worth tracking down from £3,300 on a 2000X plate but the stars of this particular show must be the diesel models. Pay £3,300 for a 2.0-litre HDi LX hatch on a 2002 51 plate or £3,500 for a similar vintage estate.
Although cabin trim quality isnt the best in class, the Xsara comes from tried and tested stock and most of the faults have been well ironed out. The engines in particular are supremely reliable and few issues have emerged so far. Check for over-enthusiastic use on Coupe models, as these can eat front tyres. Aside from that, make sure the car has been regularly serviced, is free from parking knocks and scrapes and check the interior for signs of destruction by kids.
A clutch assembly is around £90 and an exhaust system about £385 including a catalytic converter. Front and rear brake pads will be in the vicinity of £40-45 each. A radiator is about £150, an alternator about £250, a starter motor £220, and a replacement headlamp can be up to £75-80.
Being based on the Peugeot 306 is a good start if you want an entertaining drive and the Xsara doesnt disappoint. Try it over speed humps or a poorly surfaced road and you cant help but be impressed with the way that the springs absorb all that the elements can throw at them. The flip side is that such a soft ride does, inevitably, mean an extra dose of roll in the corners when youre pressing on hard. In giving, the engineers have also taken away.
2592×1944-foto-original-by-mrmegas-citroen-xsara-caraudio-2-cajon-sub-de-15p-copy.jpg
If you want something stiffer however, the more tautly sprung Coupe models should provide it. As well as the 90bhp and 110bhp versions of the 2.0-litre HDi engine, theres a 70bhp 1.4-litre HDi unit to seek out in five-door LX trim.
This version brings a modern diesel engine within the budgets of more buyers. A CO2 figure of just 120g/km and an average fuel figure of 63mpg combine with a top speed of 102mph to make this a very attractive budget option. The rather weak entry-level 1.4-litre petrol unit is best avoided.
Much better, if funds allow, to trade up to the 110 bhp 1.6-litre 16-valve engine that will rev happily from rest to sixty in 11.0 seconds on the way to 121mph. Xsara customers who want a little meat under their right foot can have the punchy 137bhp 2.0-litre engine. That goes in top-spec hatches and estates, thought the sparkiest VTS Coupe gets the full 167bhp complement. Focus apart, few rivals are better to drive.

It may not be the most innovative car that Citroen have ever produced, but the Xsara is one that did wonders for the companys bottom line. If you want a well-equipped car at a bargain price thats going to be reliable and fun to drive, its difficult to put a foot wrong with a Citroen Xsara.

The second model, the Vectra B, was introduced in 1995, and the model range included an estate version for the first time. This model replaced the Vauxhall Cavalier in the UK, and the Holden Apollo in Australia. In 1998, Holden began assembly of the Vectra for export to other right-hand drive markets in the region, although this was aversely affected by the Asian economic crisis, and ended in 2001.
Engines started from the 71 PS (52 kW) 1.6 L, Family 1 but eventually the 8-valve engines were all replaced by 16-valve powerplants. The 2.0 L Family II engine, with 136 PS (100 kW) was developed as a basis for touring car racing, but the top of the line was a 2.5 L V6 with 170 PS (125 kW). Diesel power came once again from Isuzu, but now featured direct injection and a 16-valve head. In 1999 the Vectra was updated, receiving a mildly modified body (that can be identified by the single piece headlight units and body-coloured bumpers) together with somewhat improved handling characteristics and better equipment.
Sporting limited edition models included the touring car championship inspired i500, Super Touring and GSi. The first model was developed in Germany by Opel Motorsport, with the V6 engine’s power increased to 195 PS (143 kW), and the other two were created in Milton Keynes by Motor Sport Developments, the team that run the Vectras in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Only 3900 GSi models were ever produced, mostly in saloon and hatchback guise. With only 317 estate versions produced during this time, they became one of the rarest production Vauxhalls ever.
A related model sold in the United States was the Saturn L-Series, introduced in 2000 but dropped from the lineup in 2005. It was replaced by the 2007 Saturn Aura, which is based on the current Vectra. Introduced in the summer of 2002, the current model, the Vectra C, is built in Germany and the United Kingdom, and is based on the GM Epsilon platform. It is available as a four-door saloon, while the five-door hatchback, known as the Vectra GTS, is meant to recall cult models from Opel in the past such as the Commodore GTE of the 1970s.
The engine range was substantially modified to account for an increased curb weight. While a 122 PS (90 kW) 1.8 Family 1 Ecotec engine was the base model, a 2.0 L turbocharged Family II engine with 175 PS (129 kW) and a new 3.2 L V6, with 211 PS (155 kW) was also offered. Diesel power, now important for commercial success in Europe, was first provided by Isuzu (a 3.0 L V6 is still retained), but the four-cylinder diesel engines were replaced by Ecotec CDTI (Fiat-designed MultiJet) units with 1.9 L, capable of 150 PS (110 kW), in 2004.
The Vectra received a facelift near the end of 2005, and the V6 engine was replaced by an Australian-built 2.8 V6 Turbo unit, similar to the one used in the Saab 9-3. More importantly, Opel introduced, for the first time, an OPC (VXR in the UK) version the Vectra, available only in the hatchback and estate bodies. Power on the Saab V6 Turbo was increased to 255 PS (188 kW), and maximum speed just falls short of 250 km/h (155 mph).
In the UK, the hatchback is not considered a specialty model. In Australasia, the rebadged Holden Vectra ZC is considered more upmarket, though not to the same extent as in Europe. An estate version, called the Caravan in Germany, was released in 2003. Sales of the Vauxhall Vectra in the UK have not been as strong as its predecessor’s. For much of its production life, the original Vectra was the fourth best selling car in the country, yet the current model has never come higher than eleventh in the country’s car sales charts, though it is still the second best selling car in its sector behind the Ford Mondeo.
Based partly on the Vectra C, the Opel Signum is an ‘executive hatchback’ with a completely different layout in the rear, along with a few more refinements than the Vectra C.
While the Vectra C is sold in Mexico and Chile as a Chevrolet, it is not marketed in Brazil, where a new, locally designed Vectra saloon, based on the current Astra was released in October 2005. This model replaced the Vectra B, which was still available in Brazil until that date. This new model will also be sold in Eastern Europe as Opel Astra . A hatchback version, released in 2007, is basically a clone of the Opel Astra, is sold as the Chevrolet Vectra GT.
Similarly, in Australia and New Zealand, the European-sourced Vectra was dropped and replaced with the Holden Epica, a rebadged Daewoo Tosca in March 2007. Due to stockpiling of 2005 model Vectras for the Australasian market, there was enough supply of the car for deliveries to last through to 2007, as a result facelifted 2006-built Vectra Cs were not sold in those markets. Sales of the Chevrolet Vectra in Mexico will end after 2007 due to the redesign and the price of the Euro.
The Saturn Aura is based on the Vectra C, with readjustments to be compete better in the North American market, using the long wheelbase variant of the Epsilon Platform.

Corsa was first launched in 1982 to replace the Opel Kadett City. Built in Zaragoza, Spain, the first Corsas were three-door hatchback and two-door saloon models, with four-door and five-door versions arriving in 1984. The basic model was called just the Corsa, which was followed by the Corsa Luxus, Corsa Berlina and the sporty Corsa SR. Two years later, the Corsa received a facelift, which included a new front fascia and some other minor changes. The models were called Corsa LS, Corsa GL, Corsa GLS and Corsa GT. The Corsa was known in the UK market as the Vauxhall Nova. The car became best known in the UK as a popular choice of car driving schools. Although many young British ‘boy-racers’ and ‘Chavs’ customised or ‘souped up’ their models (and continue to do so to this day), the Nova was usually seen as a dull car. Power came from 1.0 L, 1.2 L, 1.3 L and 1.4 L petroleum engines which were short on performance but strong on economy. There was also a 1.5 L diesel engine available, which was also used in the Isuzu Gemini at around the same time. All of these engines (with the exception of the 1.5 L diesel engine and 1.0 L engine, which were based on the OHV unit from the Kadett C) were based on well proven GM Family II designs. The engines and most of the mechanical components were derived from those used in the Astra/Kadett.
opel-corsa-tuned-1-3rd-maxi-tuning-show-montmelo-2001-wallpaper-copy.jpg
A 1.6 L multi-point fuel injected engine with 100 PS (74 kW) and capable of 186 km/h (115 mph) was later added to the Corsa/Nova, giving decent performance and being badged as a GSi or, in Britain, GTE (only pre-facelifted models, later models were all called GSi). A model with an 82 hp 1.4 L multi-point fuel injected engine also became available as the SRi, which was otherwise mechanically identical to the GSi. The car’s handling and styling were still criticised as being dull. There were also numerous reports of single-vehicle rollover accidents that called the handling into question.
The design was freshened in 1990 with new bumpers, headlights, grille and interior, but the car was showing its age against strong competition such as the Renault Clio and Peugeot 106.

In the UK, the Corsa has developed a cult following amongst enthusiasts because of the simplicity of modification. Popular modifications include C20XE (150bhp) and C20LET (204bhp) engine conversions, which create reasonably quick cars, quite cheaply, which are ideal for hill climbs and track days. There are several clubs which provide users with good sources of information on maintaining and modifying.
The Vauxhall Nova was produced by General Motors between 1983 and 1993. It replaced the Vauxhall Chevette and Opel Kadett City. All Nova and Vauxhall Corsa models were made in Spain.
Chevrolet also produced a series of cars under the Nova branding in the United States and Canada during the 1970′s and 1980′s. It’s later models were designed by NUMMI and were similar in design to the Toyota Corolla.
Sales in the UK were strong right up to the end, but by the time the last Nova was made in early 1993, it was looking very dated in comparison to more modern rivals like the Peugeot 106 and Renault Clio. Its successor was the Corsa; the first Vauxhall to adopt the same model name as the Opel version. By 1996, the whole Vauxhall and Opel ranges were identically named.
A clever TV advert in 1986 featured the Los Lobos hit “La Bamba” playing in the background as trick computer technology allowed the Nova to drive over vehicles in a busy city.
The Nova is becoming a less and less common sight on British roads with time. Many of these cars have been modified by younger owners and gained the car a strong association with “chav” culture. Worse still, many Novas have been targeted by joyriders due to the car’s minimal security specification.
In 1993, a curvier, more attractive, Corsa was unveiled, and in the UK, Vauxhall dropped the Nova name, with the car now being known as the Corsa. The following year, it was launched by Holden in Australia, as the Barina, replacing a version of the Suzuki Swift sold under that name. This proved a success, and was the first Spanish-built car to be sold in significant volumes in the Australian market. Power came from 1.2 L Family 0, 1.4 L and 1.6 L Family 1 petrol engines, as well as an economical 1.5 L turbodiesel engine. Unlike the previous model, there was no saloon version, but one was designed in Brazil for the Latin American market, as saloons were much preferred to hatchbacks. This was also introduced in South Africa and India. A station wagon, panel van and pick-up truck were also introduced. The wagon version was sold in some European markets (including Italy), badged as an Opel. The Corsa also spawned a small coupé called Opel Tigra. A 1.0 L 3-cylinder Family 0 economy version was launched in 1996, and a Lotus-tuned suspension was added as well as an exterior refresh. Strong competition came from new models like the Peugeot 206, Fiat Punto and Škoda Fabia.
The sedan model is still built and sold in Brazil as the Chevrolet Classic, and Chevrolet Corsa Classic in Argentina and also in Chile. A budget version, the Chevrolet Celta, has bodywork resembling the late 1990s Vectra and Astra. The Celta is sold in Argentina as the Suzuki Fun. Mexico has their version of the hatchback and sedan, known as the Chevy C2, which is also sold in Colombia. All Mexican versions were known as the Chevy, with the names Monza used on the sedan, and Swing and Joy on the hatchbacks.
The saloon and wagon versions were produced in China by GM Shanghai as Buick Sail and Buick Sail S-RV, respectively, until 2005. That year they became known as the Chevrolet Sail and SRV. In September 2006, Chile became the first country outside China to receive the Chinese-assembled Sail; it is called the Chevrolet Corsa Plus, available as a four-door sedan with a 1.6 L 92 PS (68 kW) engine. The Corsa Plus includes dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, electric windows and central locking as standard equipment.citroen-saxo-copy.jpg
The Saxo, known during its development phase as “Project S8″, was launched in 1996 to replace the Citroën AX. The AX ran along side the Saxo until late 1998 before it ceased production. The Saxo’s platform, engines and major components were a development of the AX and were shared with the Peugeot 106 of Citroën’s sister company, Peugeot.
The Saxo was one of several Citroën models from the 1990s that were criticised for looking too conservative in contrast to the avant-garde design of earlier Citroëns, such as the CX, BX and XM. In particular, the Saxo shared not only mechanical components but also its body design and appearance with the Peugeot 106, which was launched in five years earlier, much as the 1970s and 80s Citroën LNA was a badge engineered version of the Peugeot 104.
The different trim levels and engine options in the Saxo range changed many times during the model’s lifetime, although each differently-named trim level, such as the Saxo First, Saxo Forte, Saxo Scandal, Saxo Eastcoast, Saxo Desire, Saxo Executive, and Saxo Westcoast (Furio in the later MkII variant), used one of three engines; 1.0 L, 1.1 L and 1.4 L petrol engines and a 1.5 L naturally-aspirated diesel engine. There were also a number of special editions, offering extra options and equipment at a reduced price, an example of which being the Saxo Open Scandal which featured a large electric sunroof that extended towards the rear of the car.
There were also two sporting models in the range. The 1.6L eight-valve model that does 0-60mph in 9.2 seconds, the VTR, produced 90 bhp (67 kW) to begin with, and then later models from 2001 onwards produced 98 bhp (73 kW) due to emission control changes. The VTR came with 14″ alloy wheels, firmer suspension, sports seats and a Body Kit. The 120 bhp (89 kW) VTS featured a sixteen-valve version of the same engine, with a passenger air bag now as standard. Side airbags and air-conditioning were optional as well as ABS except on the VTS which was standard specification. Both models feature a rear spoiler which was later molded to fit the outside rear windscreen instead of the outer boot shell. Air-conditioning was not fitted to the UK-specification Saxo.
In late 1997, the Saxo received a minor “facelift” in the form of a new front grille. Around this time, Citroën also started fitting ignition key transponder chip immobilisers, rather than the keypad type immobilisers of previous models.
In 1999, the ‘Mk II’ or Phase II version of the Saxo was introduced, featuring an updated front end, notably the curved headlights. The rear of the car received only a minor styling change in that the light cluster coloration was slightly lighter than its predecessor. Minor changes in the engine department were made and also changes to the dials, such as the inclusion of a digital odometer. Minor adjustments to the door locks were also made.
By the beginning of 2002, the end of Saxo production was approaching. The model line-up continued alongside the new five-door C3, but Saxo sales fell dramatically. Only the Furio, VTR and VTS models remained popular. Citroën finally ceased production of the Saxo in late 2003 when the three-door C2 was launched. Its twin, the Peugeot 106, also ceased production at this time and was replaced by the 107. Their crash test results from Euro NCAP were only 2 stars, which was a poor effort by modern-day standards but back in 1996, this was considered relatively good.
copy-of-wallpaper-car-tunning-peugeot-206-txiru-copy.jpg
During the early to mid-1990s Peugeot decided not to directly replace the iconic Peugeot 205, citing the reason that superminis were no longer profitable or worthwhile. Instead, Peugeot followed a unique strategy and decided that its new, much smaller, supermini, the Peugeot 106 launched in 1991, would take sales from the lower end of the 205 range while the lowlier models of the Peugeot 306 range, launched in 1993 to replace the Peugeot 309, would take sales from the top-end 205s. Between the 106 and 306 Peugeot hoped that the 205 would not need to be replaced, and could be phased out slowly, while customers who would normally plump for the 205 would continue to have a choice with either a smaller or larger car.
Unfortunately for Peugeot, this strategy did not work. With the 205 phased out, sales of rivals’ superminis continued to sell well and even increased, and without a direct competitor to these rivals Peugeot was losing sales fast. A new supermini was required, and the 206 was launched in 1998 as a somewhat belated replacement for the 205.
peugeot-206-mega-tuned-4-3rd-maxi-tuning-show-montmelo-2001-wallpaper-copy.jpg
Although the 206 moniker indicates a direct continuation from the 205, some critics state that the car should have instead been badged 207. This is because Peugeot launched its latest generation of cars in the early to mid 1990s, with the 106 of 1991, the 306 of 1993 and the 406 of 1995.
Its eventual successor – the Peugeot 207 – was launch in 2006 but Peugeot announced its intention to keep the 206 in production until 2010. As of 2007, the nine-year-old 206 is Peugeot’s best-selling car of all time, and its demise in 2010 will spell an end to the ’06′ generation of Peugeots after almost 20 years.
peugeot-206-tuning-california-copy.jpg
With no larger in-house rival from Citroën to base its new supermini on (the Citroën Saxo shared its platform with the 106), Peugeot developed an all-new front drive platform for the 206.
The 206 was originally launched as a hatchback with 1.1 , 1.4 and 1.6 -litre petrol engines and a 1.9 litre diesel engine, a HDi version with common rail coming later. In 1999 a 2.0 litre GTi capable of 210 km/h, and in 2003 a tuned version of the GTi called the Peugeot 206 RC (GTi 180 in the UK), were added to the range. It did 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.4s and it reached a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph) with 180 bhp (130 kW). In 2001, two more versions of the 206 were launched – the 206 CC (coupé convertible) with a folding steel roof and the 206 SW station wagon. A 4-door sedan version, developed with Iran Khodro, was unveiled in late 2005, and it is available in the Iranian, North African, Chinese, Russian, and Bulgarian markets.
peugeot-206-tuning-taxi-style-copy.jpg
The 206 is mainly manufactured in Peugeot’s Poissy and Mulhouse factories although the car is also produced by Iran Khodro in Iran for that market, although Iran’s model will reportedly be exported as well.[1] It was assembled in Chile for the Mexican and Colombian markets (French made 206s were cheaper than Chilean-built ones, in Chile). The Brazilian production in Porto Real, Rio de Janeiro, started in 2001, followed by the SW version in 2005. The Brazilian production features 1.0 L 16V, 1.4 litre 8V and 1.6 litre 16V engines, the last two of which are flexible fuel engines (petrol/ethanol).
The Peugeot 206 was also built at Ryton in Coventry, England, however, with the introduction of the ’207′ to the range Peugeot decided to pull the plug on the Ryton factory which closed in January, 2007 with the loss of 2,300 jobs making it another blow to the British motor industry after MG Rover collapsed. The 206 will continue to be manufactured in France.
The Peugeot 206 proved to be a sales success all over Europe. It was the best-selling car in Europe from 2001 to 2003. The 1.4 litre XR was the best-selling model. On May 26th 2005, the 206 celebrated the five millionth unit produced since its commercial launch on 10 September 1998.
peugeot-206-tuning-copy.jpg
The Peugeot 206 is also being produced in Buenos Aires, Argentina since 1999. The models being manufactured are XR, XRD, XS, XT and XTD. The diesel powered versions use the aspirated DW engine.
In May 2006, the Malaysian car manufacturer Naza launched a locally assembled version of the 206 with the name of “206 Bestari”. From Jan 2006, Peugeot 206 is being produced in China. In September 2006 Citroën China showed of slightly modified Peugeot 206 called Citroën C2 (this car has nothing in common with the European Citroën C2).
Sales in the UK were strong from the start, with the 206 regularly being among the nation’s five most popular new cars during its first six years on sale.
It is still on sale in the UK as of 2007, a year after the launch of the 207.
Second-hand examples of the 206 traditionally hold their value well, due to high demand.

This supercharged daily-driver is a living testament to ATI’s committment to creating durable and long-lasting centrifugal supercharger systems. With a highly effective air-to-air intercooler and compact C2 ProCharger, this car was one of ATI’s first 350Z installations in May of 2003. Since then it’s put on more than 16,000 miles, some 5,000 of which accumulated during a road trip from Kansas City to California to participate in the Sport Z Magazine Supercharger Shootout, where it was pitted against two other supercharged Z’s. This otherwise stock Z, with HO Intercooled ProCharger system, won both the autocross and the dyno competition against the other two Z’s, and posted top speed in the quarter with 107.78 mph. Although off its previous best of 12.9 @ 109 mph, this winning performance was definitely worth the cross-country trip.
JIC-Magic and Ziel Motorsports teamed up to build this wildly impressive drifter car in early 2003, which was actually the prototype car for ATI’s new intercooled 350Z ProCharger system. This easily recognizable machine has been competing in drifting events for over a year, proving once again that ProCharger builds a system to last. This car was featured in a recent issue of Sport Compact Car, together with documentation of industry-leading ProCharger power. Featured on the cover of the March 2004 issue of Super Street, this previously copper-colored Z is nothing short of a masterpiece. Before turning heads at the 2003 SEMA show, Toucan industries gave this little number a massive face-lift with a new paint job, ings body kit, a rear wing, Ractive exhaust, and 19″ forged wheels, to name only a few. And of course, what Z engine would be complete without an Intercooled ProCharger system that, according to Super Street, “…helps produce enough muscle to lay down patches of blazing skid marks that’ll make your underwear jealous.” With a plug like that one, all that’s left to say is, “Nicely put.”
Rytek Motorsports contacted Accessible Technologies to get their new Skyline in top form for the November 2003 SEMA show. The addition of the polished Intercooled ProCharger system helped make this unique car a head-turner at the show, as well as making it a top performer on the street and at the track. This R35 Skyline is a striking design and a definite departure from the previous R34 model, which was very popular in Asia. The new Skyline is nearly identical to the Infiniti G35 Coupe sold in the United States, and features the same 3.5L motor as the Nissan 350Z.
